As a handyman here in The Woodlands, TX, I’ve assembled just about everything you can imagine — flat-pack furniture, heavy-duty garage shelving, kids’ swing sets, even backyard grills. I know how frustrating it is to open a box from IKEA, Wayfair, or Amazon and find a pile of parts and a confusing manual. Here are a few tips to help you assemble things like a pro — or, text me and I’ll take care of it for you.

My Pro Tips for Assembling Furniture

1. Prep the Workspace
Before I start, I clear a wide area to work. I lay out a rug or soft mat to protect furniture parts and give myself room to spread everything out.

2. Read the Instructions First
Even if I’ve built a similar item before, I take a few minutes to read the instructions. Every product is a little different, and rushing in blind usually leads to backtracking.

3. Count Every Piece
I open the box, lay out all the parts, and count the hardware. It’s better to find out something’s missing before you’re halfway through the build. If the pieces are labeled, I lay them out so the labels are easy to see.

4. Use the Right Tools
Most kits come with small tools, but I use my own set to make the job smoother:

Cordless drill with adjustable torque — Pro tip: a lot of furniture ships with an Allen wrench to help with assembly. If you can, cut the short end off and chuck the long end into your drill.
Allen wrench set — the ones that come with the furniture are usually soft metal and strip out easily. I always use my own. Pro tip: almost everything out there uses metric sizes.
Rubber mallet — AKA the persuader.
A high-quality screwdriver — I like a Stanley 6-in-1 for this.

5. Keep It Loose
I don’t fully tighten screws until everything’s lined up properly. That way I can still make adjustments without forcing parts into place.

6. Use a Second Pair of Hands When Needed
For bigger items — tall shelves, wardrobes, playsets — it’s always safer and easier with a second person helping.

Grills, Garage Shelves & Playground Sets: Special Tips

Grills: I assemble grills on a flat surface, double-check all gas connections, and follow the safety instructions closely — especially with propane models.

Garage Shelves: I anchor heavy-duty shelving into wall studs and use a level to keep everything even. Proper installation makes a big difference when you’re storing tools or paint.

Playground Equipment: Playsets need to be secure. I anchor them to the ground, tighten every bolt, and recommend regular safety checks after installation.
